What will I learn? Many people are put off by unfamiliar sounds and will not even have a go at pronouncing them for fear of making fools of themselves. It’s a pity because pronunciation can really be a lot of fun. Research also shows that people who are relaxed about making mistakes are the best learners. In this workshop you will have a go at pronouncing unfamiliar sounds through a series of fun activities and learn songs in different languages in a relaxed atmosphere. Nobody will be put on the spot, and the activities are designed to build your confidence gradually, so by the end of the day you will be able to sing Christmas carols in French, Spanish, Italian and German. You will also get an opportunity to perform the group’s best songs for friends and family at the multilingual Christmas get-together.
Who will teach me? María Fernández-Toro has been teaching languages in the UK for 25 years. She is currently a full-time lecturer at the Open University, but she began her teaching career as a French pronunciation coach for Spanish opera singers in Madrid. As a linguist and a keen musician, María has run a number of singing workshops in Spain and the UK, always with an emphasis on rhythm and pronunciation. She believes in the energising beauty of vocal sounds and loves to share her passion.
